Kentucky Trucker Drives 5 Million Miles Without a Preventable Crash

A Kentucky truck driver has reached a number that few people in the trucking industry will ever see. Greg Swift logged 5 million miles behind the wheel without a preventable accident after spending more than three decades driving for Schneider National.

Swift, connected to the Elizabethtown area, reached the milestone after 33 years with the company. He became only the third Schneider driver in the carrier’s nearly 90-year history to reach 5 million safe miles.

The distance is hard to imagine. According to Schneider, 5 million miles is about the same as traveling from Earth to the moon and back 10 times. More than 6,500 Schneider drivers have already passed 1 million safe miles, but only a small group has gone this far.

Swift was not always a truck driver. Before getting into trucking, he worked as a teacher. He later changed careers and joined Schneider, beginning a life on the road that would continue for more than 30 years.

A lot changed inside the cab during that time. When Swift started, truckers depended heavily on paper maps. Years later came GPS systems and newer safety equipment, including collision-mitigation technology.

Still, his own rule for staying safe is much simpler. Swift has said that drivers need to plan ahead and manage their time well. Trying to rush a trip can quickly create problems on the road.

Schneider marked his 5 millionth mile at the company headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The celebration included a parade and the company’s “Sound the Horn” tradition, where a truck horn is sounded inside the headquarters for major driver achievements.

There was money involved too. Swift received a $10,000 bonus for reaching the safety mark, on top of performance pay earned during his career.

These days, Swift drives a dedicated route for Georgia-Pacific. The job gives him a more predictable schedule and more time at home compared with the long-distance routes he drove earlier in his career.

Trucking also became part of his personal life. Swift met his wife, Erica, through Schneider. She also works for the company and said her husband would choose trucking again if he had the chance to restart his career.

Swift crossed the ceremonial 5 million-mile mark on August 13, 2024, surrounded by coworkers, family members and other drivers at Schneider’s headquarters.
