A truck driver is being called a hero after jumping out of his semi and running toward a van that was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 70 in Illinois.

The dangerous situation happened Saturday afternoon in Madison County. According to Illinois State Police, a disoriented driver traveled about three miles in the wrong direction on I-70.

Cammi and Greg Pierce were driving near State Route 4 when they spotted the van coming toward traffic. Their vehicle was nearly hit.

The couple tried to get the driver’s attention. Greg honked the horn while Cammi waved her hands, but the van kept moving.

Greg later told FOX 2 that the man inside appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel. He believed the driver could be suffering from some type of medical problem, although authorities did not confirm what caused him to drive in the wrong direction.

Instead of leaving the area, the couple turned around and followed the van while trying to figure out how to stop it safely.

That was when a trucker stepped in.

Cellphone video recorded during the incident shows the truck driver getting out of his semi and running toward the moving van. He managed to reach the vehicle, open the door and help bring it to a stop.

Greg also left his vehicle and ran over to help. Together, they were able to get the van parked before it continued farther down the interstate.

But there was one detail that surprised the couple after everything was over.

When Greg looked around to thank the trucker, he was already gone.

Cammi and Greg later posted video of the rescue online hoping someone could identify him. They said they simply want the chance to thank the man for what he did.

The semi seen in the video appeared to be hauling an Amazon trailer, while letters that looked like “JB” could be seen on the cab. FOX 2 contacted several trucking companies and Amazon while trying to identify the driver, but his identity had not been confirmed when the report was published.

Greg said what impressed him most was seeing the trucker leave his semi and put himself in danger to stop the van, possibly preventing a serious head-on crash involving other drivers on I-70.
